Jesse Dayton’s “Talkin’ Company Man Blues” is a gritty blues-driven tune that leads with loud guitar riffs and the amplified attitude from a man who’s spent his career as the music world’s best-kept secret, hiding in plain sight. A true renaissance man, Dayton’s resume is as diverse as it comes, having lent his guitar playing skills to an array of artists ranging from legendary music icons Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings to rock and roll hell-raisers Duff McKagan and Glenn Danzig. He’s toured with X, the Supersuckers and Social Distortion. Still, his most recent collaboration with blues siren Samantha Fish finally landed him a #1 Billboard chart position for their duet album Death Wish Blues and sold-out shows across the globe.
Collaborating with Grammy-Award winning producer and artist Shooter Jennings (Brandi Carlile, Tanya Tucker, Duff McKagan), new single “Talkin’ Company Man Blues” features Matt Hubbard (Willie Nelson) on keyboards, Jamie Douglass on drums, and Jennings bandmate Ted Russell Kamp on bass. Jennings himself makes an appearance on keyboards and percussion, while Courtney Santana delivers the sultry background vocals.
“I wrote ‘Talkin Company Man Blues’ during Covid after I saw on the news that Jeff Bezos made 13 billion dollars in one day. The lyrics are my deep and sincere concern about the declining economic health of the American working class,” Dayton laments. “I had been listening to Dylan’s 1983 release Infidels so that same vibe came out on the song. Shooter immediately picked up on that Dylan vibe and wrote an amazing arrangement for it. After listening to the playback in Shooter’s studio in LA, I felt like I’d turned another musical corner.”
Expect the Jennings-produced new studio album in spring 2024. Dayton continues his never-ending touring cycle throughout 2023 and into 2024, with more dates TBA. He also has several appearances scheduled at this year’s AmericanaFest in Nashville, September 19-23, 2023.
