Still Waters A Benefit For The Coolest Little School In Brooklyn.

Featuring Salman Rushdie and Joshua Bell at the City Winery February 22nd

How often do you find yourself gazing at bright, promising kids and silently praying they will put down the cell phone, stop those silly, minimalist text messages, sit quietly and write something special? Without any hounding, they’ll pick up a classic book and read it for, say, 25 minutes straight? Learn a second or third language? Or grab a violin and make beautiful music? Well, in the underprivileged area of Bushwick, Brooklyn, there is a school for at-risk kids ages 6-12 where such angelic activities are being encouraged. Its name is Still Waters in a Storm. Led by the saintly Stephen Haff, children of meager means can go there to learn to read and write in English, Spanish and Latin, and compose original music and play it on the violin! They are assisted by renowned authors, musicians and scholars. All at no cost.

That’s where you come in.

On February 22nd, at City Winery, there is going to be a benefit salon-style evening of great literature and great music and an auction, all to raise money for Haff, his school, his students. The entertainment will be provided by Grammy-award winning superstar violinist, Joshua Bell. He will share the stage with Booker Prize-winning worldwide bestselling author Salman Rushdie. The MC is acclaimed novelist and musician Wesley Stace

Fine food. Glorious music. Exquisite prose. All for a wonderful cause.
